Alzheimer’s Society responds to the CQC's 2021 State of Care report

The Care Quality Commission’s (CQC’s) annual assessment of the state of health and social care in England looks at the quality of care over the past year. Read Alzheimer's Society's response to the first of these reports to cover a full year of the pandemic.
Gavin Terry, Head of Policy at Alzheimer’s Society, said:
‘People with dementia have the right to expect quality care in the place they love and call home. But after a devastating year, it’s alarming to hear the CQC’s warnings of a social care sector drowning in unmet care needs this winter.
The rising numbers of people seeking emergency care tallies with what we know from our own research – people with dementia are being rushed to hospital with problems like infections, falls and dehydration that quality social care support could have prevented.
‘But it doesn’t have to be this way - social care must be prioritised in next week’s Spending Review, with an immediate injection of at least £3.9bn just to prop the system up, and provide a stepping-stone to a future where everyone with dementia can get high-quality care – delivered through an energised social care system we can all be proud of.’
