Alzheimer's Society letter to Prime Minister on her resignation

Following the announcement that Prime Minister Theresa May will resign on 7 June, Alzheimer's Society Chief Executive Jeremy Hughes has written the following letter:  

Dear Prime Minister,

I would like to thank you and acknowledge your leadership in ensuring that tackling dementia remained high on the agenda for your Government. You acknowledged that this is a challenge for our researchers, our health and social care system and, significantly, for everyone in society. This was very evident when you invited me to a Cabinet Meeting a year ago and all the Cabinet became Dementia Friends. Your personal commitment was clear in your original plans today to meet people with dementia and their carers in your constituency as part of Dementia Action Week.

Dementia is the disease people are most afraid of, and Britain’s leading cause of death. There is no cure, no prevention and no way of slowing it down. With one person developing dementia every three minutes, I look forward to your successor building on the Government’s commitment to ensuring people with dementia receive the care and support they are entitled to, and there is more research to develop effective treatments and ultimately a cure.
