ADASS Snap Survey reveals a rapidly deteriorating picture of Social Care Services – Alzheimer's Society responds
A survey by the Association of Directors of Adult Social Services (ADASS) has revealed the ‘rapidly deteriorating picture’ of social care services in England. Alzheimer’s Society responds to the findings of the ADASS survey.
Gavin Terry, Head of Policy at Alzheimer’s Society commented on the ADASS report:
‘It’s a massive concern that almost 400,000 people in this country are waiting for an assessment. The system’s on the brink of collapse - the increase in care home closures should come as no surprise, so hugely detrimental to people with dementia, who make up about 70 per cent of residents.
‘Despite the dedication of our incredible social care workforce, already severely understaffed even before Covid, people with dementia are not getting the care they need, when they need it more than ever. Our evidence shows that 82 per cent of people with dementia reported an increase in dementia symptoms during lockdown following months of social isolation.
‘We simply cannot sit by and watch our social care system crumble before our eyes any longer. Social care reform shouldn’t have to take a Christmas miracle. While addressing the cap and floor funding is welcome, it won’t fix this - the Government must inject enough cash now to improve the quality of care and make this a system we all want to grow old in.’
