45,000 reasons Wales needs a dementia strategy

Good news: as a result of the huge support for the 45,000 reasons campaign, the Welsh Government is now committed to a new dementia strategy.

We will work with the new Government to develop a dementia strategy that will radically improve the lives of people in Wales affected by dementia.

After years of campaigning for a dementia strategy for Wales, the Health Secretary, Vaughan Gething AM, has recently unveiled the Welsh Government’s draft dementia strategy. Almost 500 people responded to our consultation and we will soon share our feedback on the Government's proposal.

Petition delivery 

On 12 July, Alzheimer’s Society in Wales submitted a petition to the new Assembly calling on Assembly Members to act and help people in Wales affected by dementia.

Nearly 6,000 supporters signed our #45000reasons petition, calling for a national dementia strategy to help:

1. Improve dementia diagnosis rates
2. Increase public awareness and understanding
3. Provide training for Health and Social Care professionals
4. Support unpaid carers and
5. Ensure care within hospitals is tailored for people with dementia

People living with dementia in Wales are less likely to receive a diagnosis, and are less likely to have access to post-diagnosis support than those living in the rest of the UK.
