Your donation is helping the fight against dementia
When Sandra’s mum’s application for NHS Continuing Healthcare was first turned down, she had to use her mum’s life savings to fund the care. The system of support for people with dementia is unfair, unsustainable and needs an urgent overhaul. But your generous donation is helping us campaign for the Government to fix dementia care.
People with dementia should be able to access care based on their diagnosis, rather than their finances. Read the difficulties Sandra faced in her story below...
Since moving into a nursing home Sandra’s mum’s life savings have gone In just two months, £10,000 has been spent on her care whilst the family waited for the support of social services.
For weeks, Sandra tried to find out how much social services will contribute to her mum Jean’s care once she can no longer afford to pay from her savings. The process was fraught with difficulty and Sandra struggled to get clarity on the situation. She was also asked by the nursing home to sign a form committing her to paying top-up fees – without being told how much they would be.
Left in limbo, Sandra didn’t know how much she would have to pay, where she would find the money and whether her mum would be able to stay in the nursing home where she had recently settled.
After months of uncertainty, Jean was eventually granted CHC funding. However, no family should have to face the stress and anxiety that Sandra’s did, just to ensure their loved one gets the care they need. Thank you.
