Today (26 July), the European Union’s drugs regulator, the Committee for Medicinal Products for Human Use (CHMP), has advised that the drug lecanemab, a treatment for Alzheimer’s disease, should not be approved for use in the EU.

 The Food and Drug Administration has today approved lecanemab, a new drug for Alzheimer's disease, for use across the US.

Dr Richard Oakley, Associate Director of Research at Alzheimer’s Society, has called breakthrough Alzheimer's drug donanemab, 'a turning point', as the full trial results were revealed.

The updated Lancet Commission study, which was part funded by Alzheimer's Society, has identified two new risk factors for dementia: untreated vision loss and high low-density lipoprotein (LDL)/bad cholesterol.  

Two world-class research teams will carry out countrywide trials to identify accurate and quick blood tests that can diagnose dementia, in a bid to improve the UK’s shocking diagnosis rate.

Alzheimer’s Society is continuing work on the Blood Biomarker Challenge, a project that could bring dementia blood tests to the NHS within five years.
