Alzheimer’s Society responds to the ADASS Budget Survey 2020
Following the publication of the Association of Directors of Adults Social Services Budget Survey 2020, which shows the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on adult social care, Alzheimer’s Society comments.
Fiona Carragher, Director of Research and Influencing at Alzheimer’s Society said:
'People with dementia have been worst hit by the pandemic, accounting for a quarter of all coronavirus deaths in the UK. Our broken social care system has been laid bare and it’s dreadfully worrying to see the confidence of social care chiefs in their funding drop to just 4% - and that’s just to meet their minimum duties.
Without an urgent injection of cash into these services, there is a significant risk the temporary service reductions in the Government’s Coronavirus Act could become permanent.
This would spell disaster for many of the 850,000 people in the UK with dementia who rely on social care as a lifeline.
The government must take action and step in to ensure we emerge from this pandemic with social care on top of the agenda. If we fix dementia care, we fix social care – and this has to be the key priority.'
